Photographing birds is a wonderful and relaxing way to enjoy the outdoors and combine two great hobbies. With so many varieties of birds in the wild, the picture possibilities are almost endless. Spring offers the best time to catch the young in all their glory, trying out their techniques for flying. Use the following tips to photograph birds.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine when the best time is to photograph. Birds feed all throughout the day, yet dusk seems to be a favorite time for many species of birds. Crows love to wander a field as the sun sets to pick off the emerging insects.

  2. Step 2

Provide a meal for the birds. This method almost always yields a willing subject. Find foods that attract the kind of birds desired and dispense it in locations that are easy to access and photograph the bird.

  3. Step 3

Stalk the bird with the camera. This is an exhilarating method that never fails to get the heart pumping. Plan the approach and be very quiet. Birds are very skittish and will alert on the simplest twig snap.

  4. Step 4

Visit a local park or beach. These areas provide a natural and safe environment for the birds and may yield unexpected, yet marvelous, results. Stay on a marked path and use a telephoto lens for best images.

  5. Step 5

Use telephoto lenses whenever possible. Telephoto lenses allow the photographer to get extremely close to the bird without disturbing it. Purchase the best high quality lenses you can afford to achieve the best photographs.

  6. Step 6

Build a blind in an area where the subjects congregate. Blinds hide the photographer and allow a much closer view of the bird in its habitat.
