How to Adjust Sound on a MacBook

Adjust sound properties on a MacBook and MacBook Pro by using the preferences settings within the Mac OS interface. The System Preferences section allows the adjustment of system settings such as screen resolution and brightness, keyboard, mouse controls, sound and others.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose "Preferences" from the applications menu and select "Sound." Change alert sounds by clicking on the "Sound Effects" tab and choose a sound from the top list.

    • 2

Change the overall volume for sound effects by moving the "Alert Volume" slider. Move it to the left to lower it or to the right to increase it.

    • 3

Adjust overall volume by moving the "Output Volume" slider. As with the "Alert Volume" you move it left to lower it or to the right to increase it. To mute the volume altogether, check the Mute box.

    • 4

Alter the sound balance for the internal or external speakers by clicking on the "Output" tab. Choose your speakers from the list. Move the "Balance" slider left or right.

Tips & Warnings

  • For future reference, try the "Properties" applet when you want to change the look and feel of the Mac OS as well as making adjustments such as sound and brightness.

  • The system User's Guide and Reference manuals serve as excellent resources as well.

Hey, I've followed your advice and managed to get the sound louder but then, 'cause I don't know very much about the workings of the laptop thought I'll see what happens when I change the Line-in slider as well and since then have no sound at all. The mute box is unclicked, so it isn't that but can't figure out how to get my sound back. Can anyone help please?
