Cervical cancer occurs when there is abnormal cell growth on the cervix. A pap test can spot precancerous cells and has increased early detection of cervical cancer. The exact cause of cervical cancer is not known but certain risk factors have been associated with it. Risk factors include having a specific type of human papillomavirus, having multiple sexual partners and having a weakened immune system. Symptoms of cervical cancer include pelvic pain and abnormal or excessive vaginal bleeding.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Undergo tests to determine the stage of the cervical cancer. Staging is the term used to describe how large or widespread the cancer is. Treatment will usually depend on the stage of the cancer. Tests ordered may include an abdominal ultrasound, a CT scan and a tissue biopsy.

  2. Step 2

Have surgery. Laser surgery or cryosurgery may be used to treat early cervical cancer. Cryosurgery kills the cancerous cells by freezing them. A partial or complete hysterectomy may be needed in cases of advanced cervical cancer.

  3. Step 3

Get radiation therapy. Depending on the stage of the cervical cancer your doctor will determine if radiation therapy is needed and how many treatments you will get. Discuss ways to deal with radiation therapy side effects before treatment starts. Side effects may include diarrhea, fatigue and sexual difficulties.

  4. Step 4

Start chemotherapy. Not all women with cervical cancer will need chemotherapy. However in advanced cases it may be indicated. Chemotherapy may be administered at a clinic, a hospital or taken at home depending on the combination of medications used.

  5. Step 5

Use biological therapy. Interferon which is one type of biological therapy is used to stop the cancer. Biological therapy is usually used if the cancer has spread to other areas of the body beyond the cervix.

  6. Step 6

Go for follow-up visits. After treatment has been completed your doctor will put you on a schedule and monitor you to be sure you are cancer free.

  7. Step 7

Make healthy life style choices. Having the healthiest life style possible will help you recover from treatment for cervical cancer faster. Exercise as recommended by your doctor. Eat foods high in fiber and low in fats. Do not smoke and limit alcohol intake.
