Limber up and learn some great yoga positions. Practicing yoga can be a little intimidating at first. Follow these steps and understand what to expect before you feel overwhelmed. Take a little time and practice and before you know it, "downward dog" won't just be a move for your pooch.

From Quick Guide: Learn Yoga
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a type of yoga. There are many different kinds of yoga, some are more high-impact and some are more relaxing with less intense exercise. For example, kundalini yoga is focused mainly on meditation and breathing exercises, but bikram yoga is focused on a series of poses and is done in a room kept over 85 degrees.

  2. Step 2

Take a class. Learn positions and technique by watching the instructor. Even just one class can give you a great insight into how the moves are performed and held.

  3. Step 3

Read about yoga. Check out a yoga book from the library or buy one from a bookseller. Pictures and explanations on the positions can help you understand how your body is going to move.

  4. Step 4

Buy a yoga video or DVD. Learn the moves at your own pace and in the privacy of your own home.

  5. Step 5

Go on a yoga retreat. Learning something new in a strange place can often be easier than when you're in your element.

  6. Step 6

Practice makes perfect. Practicing the moves on a daily basis makes for quick learning. Get a yoga buddy to make a routine more fun and help you stick to it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose yoga based on your health. Each type of yoga is centered around certain health and emotional benefits. For example, anusara yoga is focused on the heart and integral yoga focuses on relaxation.
  • Consult a doctor before starting a yoga routine. Health conditions can be aggravated by certain types of yoga and it is best to discuss with your doctor before beginning yoga.
