English Springer Spaniels are medium-sized, sturdy dogs. They are gentle, friendly and affectionate and make great family pets. They love children and are safe to have around them. They enjoy lots of exercise, and take advantage of any chance to exert themselves. They have a double coat, the undercoat being soft and thick. Give your English Springer Spaniel a full grooming every 6 to 8 weeks.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Brush the coat with a pin brush, using long strokes going with the grain of the hair. The outer coat should be soft and wavy. It should also have a good sheen to it. Remove undercoat shed while you are brushing. This breed sheds constantly. Try to get rid of as much shed hair as possible before you give the dog a bath.
Step2
Look behind the ears for signs of mats and remove any knots you find. While doing this, check the insides of the ears for any signs of infection. The long, irregular shape of the ears makes it easy for them to have unnoticed internal problems.
Step3
Use clippers or blending shears to clip the body hair. Go with the grain rather than against it or across the body. If you aren't skilled at doing this, get someone who is to show you how. It takes some expertise to make sure the hair is blended correctly.
Step4
Bathe the dog using an appropriate dog shampoo.
Step5
Fluff dry the dog with a blow dryer. Brush out the coat in long strokes from the skin as you blow dry your dog's hair.

Tips & Warnings

  • English Springer Spaniels have a life expectancy of about 12 to 14 years of age.
  • Many people consider English Springer Spaniels the supreme hunting companions. Their name is derived from their method of jumping from the brush to flush out birds and other prey.
  • If your dog is a show dog, their grooming regimen is very strict and you should consult a professional groomer.
