How to Put On Snow Chains

Snow chains help your vehicle's tires grip better in snowy conditions and improve control when braking. There are several types of snow chains. Price and ease of installation are two main factors to consider. Some chains have a more comfortable ride, causing less noise and vibration when the vehicle is moving.

Instructions

  1. Diamond Pattern Chains

    • 1

Lay the chain on the ground behind the tire so they are spread flat on the ground. Position the two ends where you can reach them in front of the tire.

    • 2

Lift the two ends up and around the front of the tire and connect them near the top of the sidewall.

    • 3

Pull the chain over the tread so it's centered and covering the entire the tire.

    • 4

Connect the chain to the ratchet and tighten.

    • 5

Move the vehicle a few feet and tighten the chains if necessary.

    Cable Chains

    • 6

Drape the chains over the top of the tire so they are centered and hanging down over the tread.

    • 7

Tuck one end of the chains under the front of the tire.

    • 8

Drive the car forward about 1 foot and turn off the engine.

    • 9

Pull the chain under the tire up to the other end of the chain and hook it together.

    • 10

Tighten the cables if there is any slack. Move the vehicle at least 15 feet and tighten the chains if necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take the time before the snow hits to practice putting snow chains on your tires.

  • Reduce your driving speed to 30 mph or less with snow chains on your tires. This protects you and others while the roads are hazardous.
