How to Obey a Smog Alert

I Did This Rate: (0 Ratings)

Smog alerts are used by local governments to warn people when it's unsafe to be outdoors. Excessive smog alert days can result in higher gasoline prices, more expensive cars, and higher taxes for highway construction. Do your part to obey smog alerts and help reduce smog.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Carpool. One of the best ways to cut down on smog is to reduce the number of vehicles on the road. Other alternatives include using mass transit or riding a bike to work.
Step2
Refuel your car after 6 p.m. Vapors that leak from your gas tank while refueling can contribute to smog.
Step3
Stay indoors. The high smog levels present during smog alert days can cause respiratory illness. Avoid working or exercising outdoors until after 6 p.m.
Step4
Avoid mowing or using small engine equipment until after 6 p.m. Small gas engine mowers, chain saws and leaf blowers produce high levels of pollutants that cause smog. Use manual powered tools that don't pollute.
Step5
Leave work early or stay late to reduce driving time by avoiding rush hour.
Step6
Use less electricity. Turn down the air conditioner and turn off lights to reduce electricity use. Electric utility plants burn fuels that cause smog.
