How to Prepare for a Move From the U.S.

If you find yourself in a position where you need to prepare to travel from the U.S., there are a number of small details you must take into account. Besides simple legalities, there are a number of day to day loose ends you need to make sure are tied up before making the big move to another country.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Make sure you have a way to make money while you are abroad. There are few things more terrifying than finding yourself in a foreign country without means to make necessary travel.
Step2
Set up your bill payments arranged through automatic deposit while you're out of the U.S. You do not want to fall delinquent on accounts because you never received the bill at your new address.
Step3
Ensure that you have taken care of the legal arrangements if they are necessary for the country you are traveling to. This can solve a lot of headaches that may otherwise cause serious problems.
Step4
Make arrangements for your mail to be delivered to a reliable address. Simple mail forwarding through the post office will not take care of a move outside of the U.S.
Step5
Prepare yourself for a bit of homesickness and make an allowance for an adjustment period. No matter how ready you think you may be, being so far away from home does take its toll.
Step6
Make sure you know where the nearest American embassy is located wherever you move. Any official business in the U.S. must be processed through this facility.
