Step1
Talk about the newborn baby. Ooh and ahh over his adorable little face, tell the parents he's beautiful and congratulate the grandparents as well. You can chat about your own experience as a parent with small children and ask polite questions about the baby's health and habits.
Step2
Talk about the baby's big sister or brother, if he's not a firstborn. Ask how the older sibling is adjusting and compliment the parents on this child's good behavior, adorable outfit--whatever nice thing you can comment on.
Step3
Chat about the food with other guests. Jewish celebrations are almost always filled with delicious and plentiful catering trays. You can comment on the amazing selection or tell a story about the last time you had a knish like this one. Food is always a safe conversation starter.
Step4
Ask guests you've met before what's new in their lives. Fill them in on important developments in your life, too. Catching up is a great way to make conversation at a bris party.
Step5
Make small talk on just about any topic--sports, news, the weather--other than the circumcision itself. If you feel awkward about this procedure, your discomfort probably will be obvious. Chatting about general interest subjects is a much safer course of action.
