You'd love a garden full of beautiful colors on a bed of greenery. Perhaps you'd like to grow your own vegetables to enjoy all summer long. Fresh cut flowers and fresh vegetables help you bring a little bit of summer indoors. Follow these tips to plant a garden.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Plan
  • Gardening tools

Step1
Plan it. Draw a picture of what plants you want and where you want things planted. Imagine your garden as it matures and decide what you want the end product to be. With a good plan, the gardening falls into place.
Step2
Know your plants. Take the time to research the flowers and vegetables you want to grow. Understand how they grow and what they need. Some plants spread and need lots of space and some don't.
Step3
Research the requirements of your plants. Find out if they need shade or sun. Know how much water they need.
Step4
Get the grass out of the garden plot before you start planting. Grass and weeds can take over the garden if you don't remove them from the soil. Dig or till the garden to dig up the soil before planting.
Step5
Add a good soil mix to your garden. You want your nutrients in the soil before you begin. It's easier to add nutrient rich soil than to add nutrients later. Add soil mix with fertilizer such as manure or compost.
Step6
Dig holes in rows to plant a vegetable garden. Dig deep holes for bulb roots and small holes for seeds. You want to make sure the plant roots are deep enough to be protected from animals. Shrubs and trees are planted with the dirt attached to the bulb. Dig deep enough to cover it all.
Step7
Mulch the garden. Mulch keeps the garden from drying out. You can find mulch at your local gardening store or even at some landfill sites. Mulch is often made from rotted plants.

Tips & Warnings

  • Weed regularly.
  • Have a theme. Create a garden with specific colors or a specific food type like a chili garden.
  • Water your garden daily the first week after planting. Then water according to plant directions.
  • Edge your garden to create an attractive garden with a pattern. Edging also keeps the soil in the garden instead of having fall onto the grass.
