Stock up on snacks and prepare to paddle down the river. Canoe day trips are a chance to enjoy the outdoors, spot some wildlife and be one with nature. Peruse these pointers for packing the right gear and have a worry-free adventure.

From Quick Guide: Vacation Spots Near You
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wear appropriate clothing for a day trip. Most canoe enthusiasts suggest you wear a t-shirt and quick-dry shorts with a bathing suit underneath if you are traveling in the summer. Flip flops should be avoided. Wear shoes with laces or straps. In cooler weather, wool socks and a windproof jacket are must-haves. No matter the temperature, pack an extra sweatshirt, jacket and a blanket or sleeping bag in case you get chilled.

  2. Step 2

Add suntan lotion, insect repellant, sunglasses and a hat. These items will prevent sunburn, bug bites, exhaustion and dehydration. A strap for your sunglasses is also necessary.

  3. Step 3

Pack a bare essentials first-aid kit, at least one form of communication and any medical prescriptions you are using. Day trips can turn into multi-day trips if you get stranded or lost. Carry medication with you to maintain health. A cell phone, long-range walkie-talkie and emergency flare are all good ideas.

  4. Step 4

Plan for two meals and take plenty of water. You may need to eat only once, but you'll be prepared in an emergency and the second meal will only take up a small amount of space on the canoe. Remember everything is likely to get wet. Pack items that won't be easily harmed by water, such as vegetables, fruits or individually wrapped snacks. Skip bread and crackers.

  5. Step 5

Include a map of the body of water, and mark the take-out point clearly. Maps, a compass and a waterproof flashlight will increase your efficiency and confidence.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stash an extra set of car keys somewhere in the canoe, and also bring along your primary set. If one set of keys gets lost accidentally, you have the second set to fall back on. You may also want to bring some cash in the unlikely event that you would need to make an emergency purchase.
  • Dry bags are a product made especially for trips on the water. Pack several of these on your day trip to keep essentials dry. Dry bags are inexpensive and can be purchased online or at a sporting goods store.
  • Many canoe enthusiasts pack a waterproof camera and extra batteries on a day trip.
  • Don't forget a safety-approved life jacket.
