Make Your Own Halloween Costume

Halloween is such a fun time of year, however, buying costumes can get fairly pricey. With a few craft supplies, and maybe a trip to a second hand store, you can make a great Halloween costume for only a few dollars.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Various Craft Supplies (Paint, Cardboard, Tin Foil, Tape, Fake Flowers, etc.)
  • Face Paint
  • Clothing to Match Your Desired Costume
  1. Step 1

First, decide on what you would like to be. A mime? A robot? A princess? Once you decide on what you would like to be, decide what pieces you will need to make. Write everything down so you don't forget.

  2. Step 2

Next, gather all your craft supplies together and begin making what you need. For example, if you would like to be a robot, use a cardboard box and cut a hole for your face, and cover the entire box in tin foil. Use your imagination! Decorate everything (or allow your kids to decorate) however you'd like. This is YOUR Halloween costume!

  3. Step 3

Once you've crafted all the pieces, decide what you're going to wear. For our robot costume, something grey would be most suitable. If you don't have what you'd like to wear, head down to the second hand store. Often times you can get good clothing at very affordable prices. Put the whole outfit on and make any adjustments. Again, be creative! For the robot costume, you may want to put a "panel" on the chest, made out of duct tape and color it with permanent markers to make the buttons.

  4. Step 4

On Halloween night, use the face makeup to give the finishing touches to your costume. Take lots of pictures, this is a Halloween you will not want to forget!

Tips & Warnings
  • Check out garage and yard sales for crafting items. They can be used for all sorts of things, including costumes.
  • Make sure that the clothing you pick is warm or cool enough (depending where you live.) Trick or Treating with a hot or cold kid is not very much fun.
  • These costumes can be passed down from year to year. If you have a younger child, they can wear the costume again and add their own flair to it.
  • If you need help with scissors, glue guns, or other dangerous objects, make sure to ask an adult for help.
  • If you are wearing a dark costume, make sure to wear reflective tape (or something that glows) so that you are visible to cars.
