Dogs who throw a fit when other dogs go by their crates at a dog show are dreadful. Not only do they create a bad impression for you and your kennel, they can scare the living daylights out of people who walk by and other dogs. Creating a good impression for yourself and your kennel name is highly important at a dog show!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Your dog
  • A crate for your dog
  • treats for your dog
  • friends with dogs who will walk by
  • PATIENCE

Step1
You need to set this up by crating your dog, preferably in a fun match environment, but a dog obedience class works well also.
Step2
Collect three or four friends with dogs who are willing to walk by your dog that is crated.
Step3
Stand about 20 feet away from your dog that is in the crate. Praise him for being quiet.
Step4
Then walk to the dog's crate, give him a treat, walk back to your "post" where you are standing. Continue to do this as your friend with the dog approaches. As he nears your dog, up the level of praise and reward as long as your dog is remaining quiet in his crate.
Step5
Continue to do the praise and reward with treat about every ten feet as the person with the dog approaches your dog. Stop treating immediately if he begins to fuss at all.

Tips & Warnings

  • Absolutely STOP treating your dog if he makes any aggressive movements in his crate
  • Use more than one person. Setting this up with at least three different people with three different dogs.
  • This training technique will also work for dogs who are vehicle aggressive.
  • It is best to use friends whose dogs are well behaved while walking by. Using a dog and person who cant control his own dog during this training is only going to defeat your purpose.
  • Set this up at least two different times to make sure your dog is "stranger proof" when in his crate.
