How to Take a Good Picture

Many people today are taking digital images for the simple reason that digital point and shoots have come way down in price. Yet, many people take pictures at events with little to no clue on how to actually use the camera. The pictures they obtain, while holding some sentimental value, will generally be blurry or will not tell the story to someone who wasn't there. Here's the how to...

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A Camera...that's it
Step1
If you are at an event of just out for a walk, the steps for taking a photo are the same. For the purpose of this explanation, I would say we are at a reception where people are having fun eating and laughing. Let's also assume the camera available is simply a Canon SD550 (normal point and shoot, nothing fancy). Your first step is to look around the room. What do you see?
Step2
The next step is to pick a group of people that seem jovial and walk around. See what angle shows the most face. This is important.
Step3
Next you are ready to frame your candid shot. Candid shots almost always appear better than posed. Why? This is because some people come out bad in pictures when they know it's coming. They are nervous about how they appear and usually these people will make the same stupid face they always make for pictures. They try to hard. A candid shot will capture them naturally. Not all candid shots work out, but they do tend to be more successful.

Now frame your shot so there is no blank space like in kindergarten when the teacher told you to draw over the whole page.

Get close to your subjects...if you just zoom in you lose resolution

Don't forget to get the faces, there're the most important part

Look at the example image. These two people are not posed, but the frame is full and you get their faces.

Tips & Warnings

  • The more things you shoot the better you'll get at it
  • If it's digital it costs you nothing to shoot so take as many pictures as you want
  • Don't be shy
