Step 1
If your dog does not know the basic commands, it is time to teach them! Sign up for a group dog obedience class or hire a trainer in your area. Teach your dog to sit, lay down, stay, go to their bed, come, and to walk nicely on a leash. These are the foundation of a good dog!
-
Step 2
Form the correct attitude. Keep repeating to yourself - "I will be more stubborn than my dog", "I will be more stubborn than my dog". Also repeat to yourself - "I will not give up!", "I will not give up!" Keep telling yourself these two things during the most frustrating of moments.
-
Step 3
Feed your dog only twice per day. Do not free feed your dog! One of your dog's most valuable resources is their food, you control their food you control them. If they know their food is always down there whenever they want it, why should they listen to you? Feed your dog half of their daily amount in the morning and half in the evening. Leave the bowl down for only 10-15 minutes, then pick it up and put it away. At first they will be a little confused, but soon they will learn to eat on your schedule not theirs.
-
Step 4
Before you put your dog's leash on to go for a walk, ask your dog to sit. If they do not sit, then put the leash away and go sit down. In a few minutes try again. Keep doing this until they sit to have their leash snapped on. Once they do sit praise them and then reward them by taking your dog for a walk. They will learn they need to listen to you if they want to be rewarded.
-
Step 5
When playing fetch with your dog ask them to either sit, lay, or stay before you throw the ball for them. If they know a trick ask them to perform that trick!
