It's been said time and time again: Helmets save lives. For tips on finding the right bike helmet for you, follow these steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Go to a bike shop or a sporting goods store.

  2. Step 2

Choose a helmet in a color and style you like.

  3. Step 3

Open the box and take out the helmet.

  4. Step 4

Flip the helmet over and look inside.

  5. Step 5

Locate the sticker from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. If the helmet is a newer model and does not have this sticker, choose another one (see Tips, below, for information on older helmets).

  6. Step 6

Try the helmet on if it has been approved as safe. Adjust the straps to fit snuggly under your chin.

  7. Step 7

Shake your head around to check that the helmet does not move. If it does, and the straps are as tight as is comfortable, choose a smaller size.

  8. Step 8

Push up the front of the helmet with one finger. It shouldn't slide too easily off your forehead. If the helmet cannot be adjusted to fit, choose a smaller size.

  9. Step 9

Try to unbuckle the helmet with one hand. Try several other helmets with different buckle designs.

  10. Step 10

Buy the helmet that fits and has an easily operated buckle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Brightly colored helmets are cooler and easier to see on the road.
  • Soft-shelled or "microshell" helmets made of hard Styrofoam and a thin plastic outer covering are lighter and easier on your neck than "hardshell" helmets, which have thick plastic shells.
  • Older helmets may have stickers from the American National Standards Institute or the Snell Foundation instead of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. If you cannot find a sticker from at least one of these organizations, choose a different helmet.

on 11/22/2005 When buying a helmet, make sure that you do not get one with the padding inside secured by Velcro. If any of the padding comes off, all that will be left is the itchy, annoying Velcro that will poke and irritate your scalp through the rest of your ride.

on 11/22/2005 Dont buy a purple helmet with the word 'EXTREME' written in bright yellow letters down the side. It makes you look like a dork.

on 11/22/2005 Look under your helmet near the American National Standards Institute or the Snell Foundation sticker and you'll see an expiration date. Normally helmets last about 5 years. Just remember nothing lasts forever.
