A little-known gem located only 30 minutes from Las Vegas, the Mt. Charleston area provides some incredible hiking. With temperatures that average 20 to 30 degrees cooler than Las Vegas, it's the ideal getaway for some outdoor fun. The scenery is pretty incredible, too!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Guidebook
  • Plenty of water
  • Snacks
  • Comfortable shoes with good tread
  • Camera (optional)
  • Extra layers of clothing (like a light jacket or fleece, even in the summer)

Step1
Get a guidebook for your trip, as it will provide you with the best directions to the hiking areas. Some of the best are Afoot and Afield: Las Vegas and Southern Nevada by Brian Beffort and Hiking Southern Nevada by Branch Whitney.
Step2
Drive to the Mt. Charleston area. Your guidebook will tell you if your chosen hiking trail is located off of Kyle Canyon Rd., Lee Canyon Rd., Cold Creek, or Mt. Potosi. The above referenced guidebooks have very accurate directions.
Step3
Park your vehicle at the appropriate trailhead. Please be sure to stay in marked parking areas.
Step4
Inventory your gear before setting out on your hike. Make sure your car keys are secured to yourself or your backpack and lock you vehicle.
Step5
Enjoy your hike! The Spring Mountains/Mt. Charleston area is very picturesque and will provide you many opportunities for great photos. Be sure to stay on marked trails!

Tips & Warnings

  • Respect Leave No Trace principles: take your trash with you, don't disturb the flora and fauna, don't remove items/artifacts from the trail system, and help maintain the trails for those who hike behind you.
  • Stay on marked trails at all times.
  • Know before you go: don't attempt a trail that is over your ability level and read about your chosen trail prior to going.
