This is the best peanut butter fudge and it's easy to make.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3 cups of granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of milk- 1% works best.
  • dash of salt
  • 1 1/2 cups of peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup of butter or 1/2 a stick
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • Dutch oven
  • Greased cake pan or 2 greased square fudge pans
  1. Step 1

Measure out 3 cups of sugar, 1 cup of milk and a dash of salt into a Dutch oven and mix completely. Put on medium heat and stir occasionally. Meanwhile, get pan ready and set aside, then prepare other ingredients- see step 2.

  2. Step 2

Measure out 1 1/2 cups of peanut butter, 1/2 butter and 1 tsp of vanilla into a small bowl and set aside. Put cold water into a see-through glass and set aside. *Be sure to stir milk and sugar mixture occasionally while doing this step.

  3. Step 3

When the sugar and milk mixture starts to boil, stir constantly and watch closely. If it starts getting thick and changing to an off white color (almost tan), it's just about ready. Keep stirring and quickly drop off spoon into the cold water glass (previously set aside) and check for soft ball stage. When it reaches the soft ball stage, quickly add the peanut butter, butter and vanilla from the bowl, previously set aside, until all is mixed well. Quickly pour into greased cake pan and refrigerate for 1 hour.

  4. Step 4

After fudge has completely cooled, cut into squares.
Makes 5-6 dozen, depending on size of pieces.

Tips & Warnings
  • Soft ball stage is the hardest part of this recipe to master. Be patient. It took me a few tries to get it, but once you know, you never forget. The mixture should look like little balls when dropped into the cold water, thus called, "the soft ball stage." They almost look like frozen raindrops.
  • The mixture is very hot and burns something terrible. I know because I have 3 scars on my hands from making this fudge. PLEASE be careful and enjoy!
  • If it gets on your skin, run it under cold water ASAP!

on 8/7/2009 One question that I believe is an error in the recipe. 1/2cup butter is a full stick or 1/4 lb.The recipe says 1/2 cup butter, or 1/2 stick. I am thinking it should be the 1 stick of butter, or 1/2 cup.

on 10/20/2007 Can't believe I found this recipe. This is the one my family uses also, and I had lost my copy. So glad I found it here before Christmas.
