How to Train a Puppy to go Potty Outside

How to Train a Puppy to go Potty Outsidethumbnail
Some puppies catch on more quickly than others.

Teaching a puppy to eliminate outdoors is one of the most important and basic things to do when first acquiring a new family member. Some puppies take a little longer than others to "get it." Most puppies understand what is expected of them within a week of training. The more time you are able to spend with your puppy while training him to go potty outside, the more quickly he will catch on.

Crate your puppy in a crate that is big enough for the puppy to stand up, turn around, and lie down. The crate should not be big enough where he can eliminate in one end and move to the other end to avoid the mess. Puppies should not be left in the crate more than two to three hours. He should be in the crate when you cannot watch him.

Remove the puppy from the crate when you are ready to take him outside. Carry him out the door and to the area where you want him to eliminate. Carrying him ensures that he cannot eliminate on the floor while en route to the outside.

Place him on the area where you want him to eliminate. Give a command, if you like, such as "hurry" or "get busy." When the puppy does urinate or defecate, praise him generously and give a small treat.

Create a schedule. Your puppy should be taken outside on a regular basis and at least every two hours. Keep a "watch" on him. If he begins to run around in circles and sniff along the floor, take him outside.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Feeding the puppy on a regular schedule will help you judge when he needs to go to the bathroom. Do not offer food or water after 8 p.m.

    • Most puppies will eliminate within one half hour after eating. Puppies should be fed three times a day.

    • Puppies who are not used a leash and a collar may fight the collar and spend all the time being afraid or defensive. A young puppy will not go far from you so you CAN if necessary take him outside and set him down on the grass in a safe area without a leash. The best alternative however is to purchase an adjustable harness and put this on the puppy and just keep it on him. Hook the leash to this harness when he is outside.
