The rifle is the weapon of choice for many hunters, and an accurate shot is most important for the hunt. When you're out in the woods and finally see that deer you've been tracking all day, you don't want your shot to miss. Sighting in a rifle takes a little time and patience but it could be the difference between bringing home that ten-point buck and coming home empty handed.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rifle
  • Scope
  • Targets
  • Ammunition
  1. Step 1

Have the scope on your rifle bore sighted to 100 yards before you begin.

  2. Step 2

Find a shooting range that will allow you to shoot from 25 yards and 100 yards. Begin by placing your paper target at the 25-yard mark.

  3. Step 3

Sit at a shooting bench and prepare a steady place for your gun. Rest the barrel of the rifle on the appropriate number of sand bags or similarly soft surface for a level shot. The bench should have a place to rest your elbow and help keep you steady as well.

  4. Step 4

Focus your scope and aim at the center of the target. Shoot one shot and analyze its placement on the target. Make the needed adjustments to your scope to get your shot in the center of the target. Most scopes are adjusted by turning them the correct number of clicks based on how far off-center your shot is. Follow the specific directions that come with your scope so you'll know which way to turn it, and keep in mind that you're shooting from 25 yards away.

  5. Step 5

Continue to shoot in this manner until your shot hits the center of the target.

  6. Step 6

Place a target at 100 yards and refocus and aim your scope as needed. This time shoot a grouping of three shots and analyze their placement on the target. Using the center of these three shots as the focal point, adjust your scope so that center will be in the middle of the target. Allow the barrel of the rifle to cool between shots, as this will affect the accuracy of your shot. Continue to shoot in this manner until your rifle is sighted in correctly.
