1
Maximize space by selecting furniture that serves more than one purpose. For example, an ottoman can be used both for seating and as a table. If space is really at a premium, find a coffee table that can be raised higher for dining.
-
2
Find storage space wherever available. Clutter makes a space seem smaller, so invest in plastic storage containers that can be slid under a bed. Coffee tables and ottomans often come with space for storing all sorts of things.

3
Keep furniture to scale. Oversized furniture will fill up a small space quickly. Choose pieces that are tall instead of wide, or shop in the children's furniture department for scaled-down versions of dressers, side tables and desks.
-
4
Check for traffic flow. People should be able to walk easily around the area without bumping into other people or furniture.
-
5
Select a color scheme. A monochromatic look gives the illusion of more space. Try keeping items in the same color family. A big pattern on a large piece of furniture can be overwhelming in a small space.
-
6
Put up a large mirror on the wall. A mirror adds light and gives the illusion of more space.

7
Finish off with accessories. Don't add so many as to make the space look cluttered, but it's nice for guests to see a sense of the dweller's personal style.
