How to Decorate A Small Apartment

Whether just out of college or starting a new phase in life, lots of people end up living at least part, if not all, of their lives in a small apartment. Make the most of the available space when decorating a small apartment by following these tips.

1. Maximize space by selecting furniture that serves more than one purpose. For example, an ottoman can be used both for seating and as a table. If space is really at a premium, find a coffee table that can be raised higher for dining.

2. Find storage space wherever available. Clutter makes a space seem smaller, so invest in plastic storage containers that can be slid under a bed. Coffee tables and ottomans often come with space for storing all sorts of things.

3. Keep furniture to scale. Oversized furniture will fill up a small space quickly. Choose pieces that are tall instead of wide, or shop in the children's furniture department for scaled-down versions of dressers, side tables and desks.

4. Check for traffic flow. People should be able to walk easily around the area without bumping into other people or furniture.

5. Select a color scheme. A monochromatic look gives the illusion of more space. Try keeping items in the same color family. A big pattern on a large piece of furniture can be overwhelming in a small space.

6. Put up a large mirror on the wall. A mirror adds light and gives the illusion of more space.

7. Finish off with accessories. Don't add so many as to make the space look cluttered, but it's nice for guests to see a sense of the dweller's personal style.
