Step 1
Take a deep breath and read the essay question slowly, then read it again. Highlight the important facts as you read the essay.
-
Step 2
Outline your answer. Before even beginning to write, spend some time outlining your answer so you can approach writing your essay in a more organized and logical manner.
-
Step 3
Use IRACC. The acronym IRACC stands for issue, rule, argument, counter-argument and conclusion. This is a technique taught in law school that allows you to write an effective argument by identifying the issue at hand, stating the applicable rule of law, applying the law to the facts of your case and addressing any counter-arguments.
-
Step 4
Practice. As part of your preparation, practice writing a full essay under timed conditions. This will make you mindful of time constraints and more comfortable when you approach the real test, the bar exam.
-
Step 5
Relax. You've spent years in law school learning how to write an effective legal argument. Now it's time to strut your stuff.
