As children, we instinctively knew how to yell. By the time we're adults, we've forgotten how to yell--try it and you might find that your throat hurts a lot for the little sound you manage to make. Many adults have to relearn how to yell. Follow the steps below to see if you can rediscover that yell buried deep inside you.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take a deep breath, letting your stomach expand as you fill your lungs.

  2. Step 2

Tighten your abdominal muscles. This will allow you to control your exhalation.

  3. Step 3

Open your mouth wide and relax your throat. You may find that this is the hardest part of yelling. Most people close their throat when their mouth is open to keep anything from entering their windpipe. However, if you want to yell well, you have to be willing to open up.

  4. Step 4

Yell. Don't try to yell your loudest the first time. Concentrate on being comfortable with yelling. Try to make your yell deep and powerful even though it isn't loud. If your throat hurts while yelling--or afterward--you need to relax your throat more.

  5. Step 5

Practice until you can yell very loud and still remain comfortable. Yell frequently to stay proficient. It not only releases tension, it's good for your lungs.

Tips & Warnings
  • Knowing how to yell may save your life. It attracts attention, frightens and intimidates your attacker and keeps your abdominal muscles tight, helping you to withstand blows to your abdomen.
  • Yelling is good for self-defense, sports, rock concerts and for relieving stress. It is not appropriate for winning arguments, disciplining children or getting your own way. Don't relieve stress at the expense of someone else by yelling at them--yell at the wall, into a pillow, at your reflection or at nothing at all.
