How to Wave a Hand

A wave of the hand can mean many things. It can be a sign of hello or good-bye. It can be a sign of dismissal or to fan oneself on a hot day. Whatever the meaning or purpose of the wave it is very easy to perform.

Instructions

  1. Side to side wave

    • 1

Lift your hand toward the person to whom the wave is being directed.

    • 2

Spread the thumb away from the other fingers of the hand and hold the rest of them together.

    • 3

Pivot at the elbow and move your hand from side to side several times. Don't forget to smile.

    Forward and back wave

    • 4

Hold up your arm toward the person to whom you are gesturing.

    • 5

Hold all fingers and thumb together. Face your palm toward the person.

    • 6

Pivot at the wrist and move your hand up and down several times. Don't forget to smile.

    Hand wave of dismissal

    • 7

Hold your hand up parallel to the ground with the palm vertical to the ground.

    • 8

Ensure that your palm is facing inward.

    • 9

Move your hand somewhat quickly from the inside to the outside with a rotation of your hand so that the sign ends with your palm facing the ground. This gesture is only performed once.

Tips & Warnings

  • Body language and gestures can speak volumes without using a single word. Be careful what your gestures are saying about you, especially in unfamiliar territory. Other cultures often use familiar gestures that mean completely different things in their country.
