How to Be a Workaholic

It's every person's dream come true-late nights at the office, weekends spent at work, missing important family gatherings to meet a deadline. It's the life of a workaholic. Sure, it creates havoc on your social life, personal relationships and perhaps even your health, but being a workaholic has its benefits, like a promotion, a corner office and additional vacation time to save, but never use.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a demanding job. Ideal professions for workaholics include law, medicine and journalism. Stress levels are high, as is the expectation to perform. Being a workaholic is much easier if you have an employer that helps you achieve your goal-being at your desk at least 70 hours a week.

    • 2

Be an early riser and a night owl. Arrive at work as soon as the building opens. If you can swing 24-hour access through a key to the building or swipe card, even better. Get to work no later than 6:00 am and put in a 14- to 16-hour day.

    • 3

Work through meals. Find the best take-out restaurants in the neighborhood and keep their menus in your desk. If you must have lunch or dinner out at a restaurant, make sure that it's a meeting where decisions for work must be handled.

    • 4

Take work home with you. That sales report is the perfect bedtime reading. Check your work email or Blackberry constantly so you don't miss any important messages. Make sure that you are always reachable by the office if you find you have to do something recreational.

    • 5

Put work before anything else. Friendships, family and romance are all barriers to becoming a successful workaholic. Be careful to lead a life that's as unbalanced as possible in favor of work.
