A fun project that will keep you supplied with unique candles, just in case the electricity goes out, is making lint candles. They are inexpensive to make, and great to use for outdoor gatherings. Just follow the steps below for the project.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Paraffin
  • Double boiler or pan of water and heat proof container
  • Lint from your dryer
  • Cardboard egg carton
Step1
Get out a double boiler or a pan with water and a heat proof container to melt the paraffin.
Step2
Find a cardboard egg carton. It is very important to use the pressed paper cartons as the styrofoam will melt.
Step3
Collect the lint from your drier. Store it in a container until you have enough to fill each egg holder in the egg carton.
Step4
Divide the lint up so that each segment in the carton has been thoroughly filled. The lint will "shrink" when the paraffin is poured into it.
Step5
Melt the paraffin in a double boiler or over boiling water. Be careful not to let any drip into the flame of the stove.
Step6
Pour the paraffin over the lint and entire base of the egg carton so that everything is thoroughly covered. It should come over the top of the lint and coat all the carton. It's okay to leave small spots on the tips of dividers that are not covered.
Step7
Cool the carton and cut it into 12 individual candles by cutting across the divider. When you're ready to use a candle, place it on a heat and flameproof surface or in sand, light the corner of the egg cozy and allow it to continue to burn until you're done.

Tips & Warnings

  • Experiment with scents by adding melted wax from scented candles. Save the candle residue in a container and use it or add it to the paraffin. Try adding scented oils that repel flying insects for outdoor use.
