If you enjoy spending time in the wilderness, hiking or camping, one small piece of equipment could prove essential. A small water filter made from a film container can easily fit in your backpack and can provide you with clean drinking water during an emergency.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Plastic film container
  • Sharp blade
  • Electric drill
  • Two water bottle caps
  • Disposable coffee filters, cotton or white cloth
Step1
Use a sharp blade to cut a hole, 1 inch in diameter, in the bottom of the film container.
Step2
Drill about a dozen holes in one of the water bottle caps, with your electric drill. Then place the cap inside the film container, so that the drilled holes show through the hole in the end of the container.
Step3
Stuff the disposable coffee filters, cotton or white cloth inside the film container. You now have a very lightweight water filter.
Step4
Filter your water by pouring it through the film container into your water bottle or cup. When you have finished, use the second bottle cap to squeeze any remaining drops from the filter.
Step5
Store your film container water filter with the second cap covering the filtering material to keep it clean. This will fit in your pocket or pack, making it easily available if you run out of water on a hike.

Tips & Warnings

  • Replace the coffee filters, cotton or white cloth periodically to make sure your filter stays clean and usable.
