Step 1
Check the loft of your lob wedge and your pitching wedge. Typically, a pitching wedge will have a 48-degree loft, and a lob wedge will have a 60-degree loft.
-
Step 2
Select the loft of a wedge that falls midway between the two wedges. For example, in the above circumstance, a 54-degree wedge would be a good choice.
-
Step 3
Decide if you want to use one or two gap wedges. In the above circumstance, if you want to use two gap wedges (a total of four), you could use 52- and 56-degree gap wedges.
-
Step 4
Check the shafts that you have for your other clubs. You should match your shafts so that they are the same. For example, if you have regular graphite shafts, you should also have regular graphite shafts in your gap wedge or wedges.
-
Step 5
Match your gap wedges to your lob wedge in style and manufacture if you are happy with your lob wedge. Consistency is important for comfort and the way you strike the ball.
-
Step 6
Decide on the amount of bounce for your wedge based upon the nature of your swing. If you have a swing that is relatively steep, you may want to select a club with a bounce of 8. Select a greater bounce of 12 if you have a shallower swing.
