Things You'll Need:
- Yarn Swift
- Skein of Yarn
-
Step 1
Untwist your yarn from the neat skein so that you have an open circle of yarn.
-
Step 2
If the swift clamps on, attach it to the edge of a table. Set the swift on a table if it has a base. Firmly attach the swift to the table since the device spins so quickly it can wobble or move.
-
Step 3
Gently loop the skein around the adjustable section of the swift. This section of the swift is called the umbrella. Hold the yarn with one hand, and make sure the yarn settles around the middle of this section of the swift.
-
Step 4
With your other hand, reach down to the bottom of the umbrella section of the swift and push up to make the swift expand. If the yarn is pulled too taunt against the swift, it will be difficult to open the swift.
-
Step 5
When the swift umbrella is opened as far as it can go against the circle of the skeined yarn, hold the swift in place and pull up the knob under the bottom of the umbrella. Pull this firmly against the bottom of the umbrella and tighten it. This ensures that the swift doesn't relax and release the yarn. Make sure that the knob is tightened firmly.
-
Step 6
Carefully cut off the sections of yarn that keep the skein together. These are looped around the skein of yarn in a figure-8, and they ensure that the yarn doesn't tangle.
-
Step 7
Find the ends of the yarn in the skein. They probably will be tied to one of the sections of yarn keeping the skein tidy. Pull the end of the yarn that is toward the outside of the skein. This ensures that pulling the yarn is easier than pulling from the inside of the skein. Now you're ready to begin winding the yarn into a ball with a ball winder, or you can knit straight off the swift.
