After you've filed your taxes and submitted your payment, you can look up the status of your federal tax payment. The information you need is right at your fingertips, whether you mailed a check through the mail or used electronic payment.

Tax Payment by Check

Step1
Call the Internal Revenue Services at 800-829-1040. Wait for a minimum of 2 weeks after mailing your payment to check on payment status.
Step2
Prepare to provide your Social Security or tax identification number.
Step3
Speak to a representative to determine whether the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) received your payment and applied the appropriate amount to your account.
Step4
Put a stop on the check if the IRS can't verify your payment.

Electronic Payment

Step1
Visit the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) website.
Step2
Navigate to the "Payments" section of the site.
Step3
Insert your tax ID number (Social Security number for individuals or an employers identification number for businesses), PIN and Internet password.
Step4
View the status of your payment.

Tips & Warnings

  • To view your status or make payments via EFTPS, you must pre-enroll.
  • If for some reason the EFTPS system is down, use the non-electronic method to find out the status of your payment.
  • If a payment is due and the EFTPS site is inaccessible, you may call the EFTPS voice response system at 800-555-3453.
