How to Clean a Football Helmet

You would think something as strong and durable as a football helmet would resist dirt. However, your helmet can trap grime and carry grass stains, and the inner helmet will get saturated with sweat to become an incubator for bacteria. Here's how to clean it.

Instructions

    • 1

Shake off any obvious loose mud, dirt or debris from the helmet.

    • 2

Wipe away the remaining loose debris with a clean, dry cloth.

    • 3

Wash the helmet to remove stubborn dirt with a damp, soapy cloth.

    • 4

Scrub the helmet scuffmarks with a brush or toothbrush. Apply pressure to remove tough scuffmarks, if necessary.

    • 5

      Towel-dry.

    • 6

Dampen a clean cloth with hydrogen peroxide. Use enough to moisten the entire inside and outside of the football helmet to disinfect both. Wipe all parts of the face guard too.

    • 7

      Let the helmet dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Even though the outer portion of the helmet receives the most visibly obvious dirt, the sweat accumulation on the inside of the helmet is a breeding ground for bacteria. Disinfect this area as well.

  • Be careful when scrubbing around team emblems and numbers with the toothbrush. Depending on how they are affixed to the helmet, they may scrub off. Don't apply too much pressure on these areas.
