How to Learn While on the Toilet

Many people spend a considerable amount of time on the toilet. In our multitasking society, using the restroom can become an opportunity for learning. What follows are some practical ways to learn while answering nature's call.

1. Find out your learning style. Before heeding nature's call, find out what style of learning you prefer, whether you are an auditory, visual or kinesthetic learner. Knowing your preferred learning style will help you organize a bathroom space that is catered to your needs. See the resource section below for links to various learning websites.
2. Get organized. Have all of your learning materials ready. Some basic items include a pad of paper, pens, pencils, clipboard, highlighters, sticky tabs, small cassette recorder and flash cards. In addition, a medium sized basket that will fit nicely besides the toilet can serve as a fashionable refuge for your papers, books and learning supplies.
3. Break your subject down into simple parts. You only have so much time. For example, if you're trying to learn the guitar, take a few chords and practice them rather than tackling an entire song.
4. Learn efficiently. Use flashcards, audio tapes, highlighters and other strategies to make the most of your toilet time. See the resource section for quick learning strategies.
5. Read some books. According to one source, a person's education level can be gauged by whether they read in the bathroom (2/3 of those surveyed with Master Degrees read while using the toilet). Keep a rack of newspapers and magazines in the bathroom. Stay current and change them at least once a month.
