Many Americans are obese, and spending billions of dollars on quick fix schemes and dieting fads. Resist the dieting fads that by understanding the basics of a healthy diet.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Read the information behind the fads. Dieting fads like the Atkins craze are too good to be true. Eating mass quantities of fat and cholesterol can't be good for your body. Ascertain if the diet's claims are too good to be true, and if they are, then move on to another one.

  2. Step 2

Understand your body, and resist dieting fads by taking into consideration what a diet is supposed to do for you. Diets should be changes that you can make for the rest of your life.

  3. Step 3

Make small changes that you can stick to. Stop putting creamer in your coffee, eating after 8:30 p.m., eating large meals after starving. Eat smaller meals througout the day to keep your metabolism going.

  4. Step 4

Exercise along with your dieting plan. Dieting fads are around because Americans want to be able to lose weight easily without exercise. Resist this impulse and start a walking, jogging or cardio routine at least three to five times per week.

  5. Step 5

Get back to basics. Resist dieting fads by just using your common sense and healthy foods. Don't let anyone tell you eating fruit is bad. Eat lots of vegetables, grains and legumes. Drink lots of water and avoid sodas (even diet).
