How to Live Among the Amish
When outsiders, referred to as English, move to an Amish community, they immediately notice lifestyle differences. The Amish do not use electricity. They ride in buggies. They shun modern conveniences. The Amish are not critical of the English for their differences. Nevertheless, the English can take steps to assimilate successfully in an Amish community.

1
Understand the core beliefs. The Amish believe in obedience to God, separation from the outside world and closeness to nature. To adhere to these beliefs, the Amish seek a simple life.
-
2
Dress conservatively. Choose clothing that covers the body, is not shape conforming and is inconspicuous in color. Unassuming dress is consistent with Amish community values.
-
-
3
Be subtle in the use of modern conveniences. Satellite dishes, Internet service, cell phones, iPods and other forms of technology are part of the modern day existence of the English. Use these technologies in a manner that does not interrupt the quiet calm pace of the Amish community or the beauty of the landscape.
-
4
Behave with modesty. Cursing, slang words and aggressive gestures are inconsistent with the peaceful nature of the Amish.
-
5
Appreciate lifestyle inconsistencies. Seek to understand before passing judgment. The Amish will sometimes hire a car or accept a ride in a car. They do not own cars because these would create inequality in the community. Many Amish rely on tourism for financial support of their community. In doing so, the Amish interact with the English but do not adopt their ways.
-
6
Respect the Amish work schedule. The Amish, primarily farmers, work intensely in the spring, summer and fall. Tuesdays and Thursdays are the least busy days of their week.
