Things You'll Need:
- 2 Axes
- Rope
- Climbing boots and clothing
- Gloves
-
Step 1
Join a rock climbing club to get an idea of what climbing is all about. Learn different techniques by training on indoor imitation hills. Go for an actual climbing session with your instructor and practice until you know all the basics and advanced approaches to climbing.
-
Step 2
Buy proper ice climbing tools from a sports store. Hire a professional ice climber and choose an ice climbing area which is suitable for beginners. For the first two weeks practice walking on hard snow with your spiked boots.
-
Step 3
Walk on a more steep area in the third and fourth week of your training. Use a rock climbing axe to stabilize yourself to avoid slipping down. In the next few days proceed to hills which are at an angle of 45 to 65 degrees from the ground.
-
Step 4
Make your first climb. Tie the climbing rope securely around your waist and dig your axe in the hill ahead of you. Find a secure foothold and use both axes and your feet to drive yourself up the icy hill or mountain.
-
Step 5
Climb to the point which is easy for you. Do not push yourself beyond what you cannot handle. Use all the equipment on steep ice hills. Follow your instructor's advice and take all precautionary measures to ensure a safe climb.
