2. Look for a long beard. Amish men stop shaving when they get married and a Mennonite man never grows a beard. It is the greatest physical difference between the two groups.

The Old Order Mennonites resemble the Amish and continues to shun modern practices and the New Order Mennonites are allowed to drive cars and use electricity. It is difficult to distinguish between a New Order Mennonite and an average American.

4. Know that the Amish separate themselves completely from the modern world because they feel modern conveniences will cause them to stray from religion. They don't permit electricity, drive cars or become involved in political activity. Mennonites are becoming more actively involved in peace and social justice issues.

5. Recognize that the Amish religion is very strict in its beliefs and will shun members who don't strictly adhere to the Amish faith. Mennonites don't believe in shunning and are more flexible in their beliefs, although they still reject all forms of violence.
