Step 1
Send a welcome packet to the K-12 students over the summer. Explain who you are, what you like to do, and what you are expecting of them in class in the upcoming school year.
-
Step 2
Request the K-12 students to fill out a questionnaire about themselves that they should bring to school with them on the first day. This questionnaire can help the children understand that you are excited to get to them each on a personal level.
-
Step 3
Create a welcoming and inviting classroom for the K-12 students to come back to school to. The children can have a feel for the teacher by how warm and inviting the room is. Encourage the class to help decorate the room during the first few days of school.
-
Step 4
Take the time out during the first few weeks of school to sit and chat with each student about the questionnaire that they filled out during the summer.
-
Step 5
Ask the students questions about how they are feeling about school, what they like to learn about, and what they are most nervous about during the upcoming year can help them feel safe and nurtured.
