Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
Step1
Tell them. Please tell your parents beforehand that your spouse is white. If you don't, this could be embarrassing for everyone, especially your spouse. Imagine your parents' words bypassing their brain filters, and not meaning to be rude, but just a reactionary impulse; they blurt some expletive of surprise, or worse—utter silence. Tell Mom and Dad.
Step2
Introduce common interest for topics of discussions. Your in-laws and spouse will have more in common than not. Do they like sports, dogs, cooking? Bring out a family album, and let your parents tell your wife about the pictures. Inform your husband beforehand to ask questions, show interest. People like it when you want to know about their family. Your parents are no different.
Step3
Show deference. Warn your spouse not to play one-upmanship with your parents when it comes to you. Remember, you were the one who sprung this surprise on Mom and Dad. Elbow your spouse if he or she tries to outdo them when it comes to knowledge about you. Tell your honey to be fascinated with information they all ready know.
Step4
Take a gift your parents have been wanting-an expensive gift. So you're groveling a little. You're winning points for surprising them and not inviting them to the wedding.
