Buying an ATV is a financial investment, which will provide years of enjoyment, if cared for properly. In addition to executing a routine maintenance schedule, equally important to extending the life of your vehicle is protecting it from weather when it is not in use. Storing your ATV under a tarp the correct way is easy and will keep it corrosion and rust-free for as long as you own it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase a quality tarp. When selecting a tarp, be sure that it is made of a heavy, durable material. Thick canvass tarps are the most effective for withstanding harsh elements. Thin, plastic tarps rip easily and allow in moisture, which will eventually corrode the outer body and internal components of the ATV.

  2. Step 2

Cover the entire ATV. To effectively protect your ATV, cover it completely. This means you must use a tarp that is larger than the vehicle and extends to the ground past the tires. Low, exposed areas will allow rain and dirt to kick up under the tarp that will form rust on the undercarriage of your vehicle. Doing this will also protect the tires' rims, which are also susceptible to corrosion.

  3. Step 3

Tie a rope or a bungee around the tires of the ATV. Securing the tarp on the ATV will ensure that it stays on with strong wind. Wind gusts can loosen the tarp or blow it off completely, exposing it to the elements. Be sure that no part of the ATV is uncovered. There should be excess tarp that touches the ground around the entire vehicle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Park and cover the ATV under additional shelter. A quality tarp will protect your ATV effectively; however, for added protection, try to find a spot under a tree or overhang of a house. If possible, store your ATV in a garage or shed.
  • Be sure that there aren't holes in the tarp you use. Even a small hole or two can allow in rain, snow or dirt, which can harm your machine.
  • Check the tarp often to ensure that your vehicle remains protected. Strong winds can loosen the rope or bungee you secured around the bottom and expose areas of the ATV.
