How to Write a Silly Poem for a Child

Delight a child by writing a silly poem for them. Writing a silly poem is not only easy, it's fun. Print the poem on special paper and frame it for even more of a "wow" reaction.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list about things the child loves or loves to do. If the child is a boy, he might love cars, worms or lizards. He might love his dog Scruffy and his big brother Billy. If the child is a girl, she may love to sing or dance, play with dolls or bake cookies. She may love her puppy or kitten.

    • 2

Write the list on a piece of paper, one word per line. Next to the word that describes what the child loves, write a word that rhymes with it. Remember it's a silly poem, so think of silly words to rhyme. For example, worm and squirm rhyme and can be made into a silly sentence. Another way to write a silly poem for a child is to make up a word. For example, the word lizard can rhyme with "crizzards"; a silly sentence could combine the word "critter" and "lizard" to become "crizzard".

    • 3

Begin composing your silly poem by writing sentences that include the rhyming words. Just write sentences to begin with; worry about how to put it together after writing the sentences. Include the child's name in several sentences.

    • 4

Decide how to rhyme the silly poem. All the sentences can rhyme, every other sentence can rhyme or two sentences together can rhyme. Write out several different ways of rhyming the sentences, until you find the one that best suits the poem and the child.

    • 5

Write out the poem then read it aloud. Listen to they way the words sound and to the cadence as you speak. Tweak the poem by changing the lines or words, if needed.

    • 6

Buy a special paper to write the poem on. Paper can be purchased with backgrounds that are multi-colored, have dogs or cats in the background, skateboards, kites, or just about anything the child loves to do. After printing the poem, put it in a special frame that also matches the child's interest. It will be a gift they cherish for a very long time.
