How to Choose a Nursing Career

If you're interested in the medical profession, you should seriously consider a nursing career. Nursing offers a variety of opportunities, and nurses are always in demand. A nursing career can be as varied as a patient care assistant to an advanced nurse practitioner.

1. Talk to several nurses about being a nurse. Ask them questions about being a nurse; from what type of nursing they prefer, and why, to the down side of nursing, and why. Ask the nurses about their best and worst jobs, and ask their advice. Ask them why they chose a medical career and what they would change if they could.

2. Visit a medical facility you are interested in. If you're interested in being a rehab nurse, visit a rehabilitation facility. Make note of what the nurses are doing and what their job description is. If you're interested in geriatric nursing, visit a skilled nursing facility.

3. Check the internet for career advice in nursing. Visit medical message boards and nursing forums. Check job opportunities offered on various medical sites. Get as much career information as possible to decide on a nursing career.

4. Talk to the school administrator if you are interested in a nursing career. Ask what courses are needed, what prerequisites are required and how long the course is. Ask about financial assistance or grants for medical careers. Make sure the school you attend is fully accredited in nursing for your state.

5. Work as a nurses' aide or patient care assistant. Many nurses start this way to find out if they can handle being in a medical setting with sick people. Nurses' aides assist in bathing, dressing and feeding patients among other duties. It's one of the best ways to find out if you are suited for a nursing career.
