How to Put a Saddle Pad on a Horse

A saddle pad acts as the buffer between the horse's back, spine, withers and barrel and the saddle. It helps to cushion the weight of the rider, along with providing the horse a smooth base beneath the saddle, as opposed to a saddle which may have various opportunities to pinch or pull. Saddle pads vary in shape and material based on personal preference and style of riding.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Approach the horse with the saddle pad in plain sight. Introduce the pad at the shoulder height of the horse, and gently place it on the horse's back.

  2. Step 2

Adjust the saddle pad so that it sits a little forward of the withers, which is the area where the neck meets the back. Feel for a bony protrusion there to make certain you have found the right place.

  3. Step 3

Adjust both sides of the saddle pad so that it hangs evenly from the horse's barrel.

  4. Step 4

Gently slide the pad toward the horse's hindquarters about 1 to 2 inches. This helps hair to lay down with the grain so that the animal has a comfortable ride.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some riders use a blanket before the saddle pad. This can be an advantage because blankets are much easier to wash than pads.
  • Never surprise the animal in any way. Quickly dropping the pad on the horse's back is a sure way for it to spook her.
