Mounting a horse is the beginning of all the great training yet to come, and it's vital you begin correctly. The correct way to mount a horse takes into consideration equipment concerns, safety concerns, your comfort and the animal's comfort.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Be safe. Make sure that the reins are in the proper position and that the saddle is cinched and tight enough. The safest area to mount is on the horse's left side at the midway point between the shoulder and flank.
Step2
With your left hand, grasp the reins and a tuft of the horse's mane near its withers. Using the mane as leverage helps you to keep from pulling on the horse's mouth with your body weight.
Step3
Place your left foot in the stirrup, or iron as some people call it. Pull with your left hand while also stepping upward. Distribute your weight downward on the stirrup, as opposed to pulling it to your side, which could pull on the saddle.
Step4
Swing your right leg over. Be careful not to kick the horse's flank or back with your swing. Be slow, steady and purposeful. Settle in softly and grasp the reins. Place your feet in the stirrups, and you are ready to train.

Tips & Warnings

  • Position yourself carefully. Mounting too far toward the back of the horse could get you kicked, while mounting to far forward causes you to end up on the horse's neck.
