Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Pick a theme. Nautical and coastal themes are the obvious choice to use in a boat house but you don't have to limit yourself to these. There are no rules that say that waves and fish have to adorn the walls. Choose any theme you want as long as it can be applied to the space and layout of the structure.
Step2
Light it up. Lighting is one of the most important features in a boat house because of the close proximity to water. Ensure the walkway and approaches are well lit in addition to the inside of the house. Use specialized deck lighting and waterproof mounts and wiring to avoid shorts and electrocution.
Step3
Be practical. Even if you are using the house more as a lounge area than a storage area, you need to consider the wear and tear. Avoid light-colored and easily stained fabrics on floors and furniture as dirt and sand will probably be brought in. Don't clutter the floors and surfaces with breakable or delicate items, especially if you have a working boathouse.
Step4
Think weather resistant. Any boat house will be near the water, whether on the coast or a river or lake. Being so close to water means that you should use appropriate building materials and specially coated woods. Even if you are decorating on a sunny day, picture your house in a storm in winter. Ensure that nothing is exposed to the elements without being properly prepared first.
Step5
Personalize it. Nothing is more boring than having the same as everyone else. Trophies, shells, flags, maps and portholes are nice touches and can be very personal objects. Choose paintings and wall adornments that mean something significant to you. Insignia and photographs of your boat in action are also nice ideas.
