Help your child make a cereal box car to keep him busy all day. With a little guidance and a few supplies, your little engineer will be creating the cars of the future. This project is great because it uses supplies that you likely have on hand, making it darn near free.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cereal box
  • Glue
  • Craft knife
  • Paint
  • Construction paper
  • Four oatmeal tub lids
  • Four brads
  • Large nail
  • Small bottle caps
  1. Step 1

Take the plastic bag out of the inside of the box. Tape or glue the flaps shut.

  2. Step 2

Use craft knife to cut a 4 x 6-inch hole, in the box. The height of the hole should be 4 inches. Cut doors on both sides of the car.

  3. Step 3

Paint the box with craft paints, or cover it with construction paper and glue. Draw the details on the car with a permanent marker.

  4. Step 4

Find four plastic lids that are uniform in size. Punch holes in the center of each lid.

  5. Step 5

Poke four holes in the box sides where the wheels will go. Attach the wheels with brads.

  6. Step 6

Use pieces of colored paper or small bottle caps for the lights. Glue them on.

Tips & Warnings
  • Help your child glue things on with hot glue so they will set quickly.
  • Cut circles from heavy cardboard if there are not oatmeal or equivalent sized lids available.
  • An adult should do all of the cutting with the craft knife.
