Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Make a list of some of the various companies in your area where you'd like to have your cooperative internship. Write down the companies' names, addresses, websites and phone numbers. Call each of the companies and ask to speak with the internship coordinator. Get as much information from that person as possible about the internship experience and what you need to do to apply.
Step2
Talk with the instructors or teachers at your school about any connections they might have in your industry of interest. They may be able to point you in the right direction and offer contacts to get your foot in the door for internships. Also, when special guest speakers comes to your class, talk with them afterward and stay casually in touch with them. Classroom speakers can be valuable sources for cooperative internships.
Step3
Apply for a few different cooperative internships on your list early to make sure you meet the deadlines. Only apply for a handful. You don't want to get too many offers (if you should be so lucky to have that problem). Make sure you completely and correctly the forms for the internship and supply all the documents required by the company.
Step4
Follow up your applications with phone calls to the people making the cooperative internship hiring decision. Treat getting a cooperative internship like getting a job. Make sure you quickly and clearly convey the reasons why you want the internship. Ask if you can come in for an interview if you feel that is warranted.
