Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Letter stencils
  • Door
  • Paint
  • Painters tape
  • Paint brush
  1. Step 1

Repair and cracks or damaged areas on the door. Take a damp towel and wipe off any dirt or debris from the door. Smooth the surface to be stenciled as evenly as possible.

  2. Step 2

Paint the entire door with a latex or oil based paint. A flat paint works best for stenciling. Choose the letter stencils. Pick the font and size of letters to use for the door.

  3. Step 3

Pick an area of the door to stencil. Use a level and pencil that erases to draw lines as guides where each letter is located.

  4. Step 4

Tape each individual stencil to the door. If the stencils overlap too much, tape them one letter at a time. Before painting, be sure the door is secured in one position so it's not moving at all.

  5. Step 5

Begin the stenciling process. Dab the paint from the brush off several times before painting the stencil. Wait for each letter to dry before beginning the next letter.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the paint you are using doesn't stick well to the door paint, lightly sand the area to help adhere the paint to the door.
  • Wash the paint off the stencil with a mild soap and water immediately after using it to avoid excess paint build up.
  • If you don't want to repaint the door, clean and dry it thoroughly before stenciling.
  • If the paint is running or smudging under the stencil, you are using too much paint.
