Want to go to the beach every day? By creating a stenciled beach mural on a wall of your home or office, you can do just that. Pick the stencils for the beach scene, then practice your technique. Practicing with the stencils on paper before taking to the wall saves time and headaches.

From Quick Guide: Stamping & Stenciling
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stencils
  • Stencil paint
  • Tape
  • Stenciling paint brush
  • Soap and water
  1. Step 1

Buy all the stencils to use in the beach scene. Stencils can be found at craft stores, online and even printed for free at some websites. (See Resource section below).

  2. Step 2

Clean and dry the wall surface in preparation for painting. Use a pencil to sketch guides for each stencil going on the wall. If you want a large area of sand, water or sky, be sure to paint these areas before beginning the stencil process.

  3. Step 3

Tape the beach stencils to the wall using painter's tape. Put up as many stencils as you can without overlapping. Leave the overlapping ones out until you're ready to remove the first set and start with them. Instead of tape, the stencils can be put on the wall using spray adhesive.

  4. Step 4

Tap the brush with just a little paint onto the wall over the stencil. The tapping motion is the best to use when stenciling to fill the area without causing paint to get under the stencil.

  5. Step 5

Start with the second stencils after the first has dried. Some stencils may have overlays to paint in a different color. Use the guide lines drawn earlier to place the stencils over the painted areas.

  6. Step 6

Remove any remaining stencils. Touch up any areas in the beach scene after all the stenciling has dried.

  7. Step 7

Clean the stencil brush, stencils and overlays with soapy water before any paint dries on them.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're not sure how to stencil, practice first on a piece of cardboard or paper.
  • Use a drying agent called Japan Dryer in your paint to get it dry quicker so you can overlap stencils and get the project done faster.
  • If you don't use stencil paint or the special dryer chemical, paint can smear when you remove the stencil, so wait until it is completely dry before lifting the stencil off.
