How to Organize Greek Week Activities

University campuses in the United States hold Greek Week to foster a sense of unity among members of the schools' Greek Chapters. The annual event, usually held in the spring, also raises money for the school and charities. Scheduling a week of college events attended by hundreds of students can be streamlined by following these steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Form an Organizing Committee. Hold meetings of all Greek Chapter members organizing the events. Decide each organizer's specific roles and record them on an "Event Organizer's Task Sheet." This task sheet should include each organizer's contact information.

    • 2

Establish and distribute a schedule of meetings for the Organizing Committee. Formulate a motto for Greek Week activities. The motto should state the purpose of Greek Week and include the date. It should appear on all Greek Week announcements, T-shirts, banners and rule books.

    • 3

Solicit ideas for events from Greek Chapter members. Try requesting ideas by email and by posting announcements on bulletin boards in the dorms, student center lounges, cafeterias and outside the offices of department chairmen. Sift through the suggestions and have the Organizing Committee vote on the best.

    • 4

Plan the individual events. Each university follows their own tradition and preferences. A common kickoff event features a Vespers service for all Greek Chapter members, held on the Sunday before the week's activities. Hand out recognitions and awards for accomplishments throughout the year here.

    • 5

Start off the week's events with a barbeque or Night Out on Sunday evening. Over the next 2 days hold Community Awareness events, such as Food Drives for the homeless and Meals on Wheels for the sick and elderly. Follow those events with Olympics and complete the events with Tournaments. Devote the last day to awards and scholarships.

    • 6

Write a rule book containing an introduction to Greek Week that explains its purpose and scope. Include pairings of the sororities and fraternities for the events and a list of captains. Post requirements for the sporting events.

    • 7

Add a schedule of events, separate rules and scoring systems for each event and the location of each event to your rule book. Complete the book by identifying and thanking the sponsors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't forget a policy strictly prohibiting the consumption of alcohol and drugs by Greek Week participants in your rule book.
