How to Change Text Orientation in a Microsoft Word Table

Microsoft Word lets you create tables in which you can apply nearly every different type of formatting. This includes changing the orientation of your text in a table. By default, Word will put your text orientation in a normal horizontal direction for your tables. Follow these steps to change the orientation of your text in your Microsoft Word table.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

1. Open Microsoft Word and start a new blank document.
2. Select the "Table" menu, then "Insert" and "Table…" to create a new table for your Word document.
3. Set the options you want to apply to your new table, using the selections in the "Insert Table" dialog box. Click the "OK" button when you are finished.
4. Use your keyboard to input your text into the new table.
5. Click your mouse to put your cursor in the cell in which you would like to change the text orientation. You also can drag your mouse over an entire row, column or table to select more than one cell to change.
6. Select the "Format" menu, and then choose "Text Direction."
7. Choose the orientation in which you would like to apply the selected table text in the "Text Direction – Table Cell" dialog box. Click the "OK" button to apply the text orientation changes.

Tips & Warnings

• You can also use the "Text Direction" button in the "Tables and Borders" toolbar to toggle between the different text orientations before applying one.
• The text orientation option will also allow you to change the orientation of images and other objects in your table.
